What is "extradosed' you may ask? The Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, sometimes referred to as the new "Q Bridge", located at the mouth of the Quinnipiac River in New Haven, CT, utilizes an extradosed structural design. A combination of a prestressed boxed girder bridge and cable-stayed bridge, the extradosed design is named after the external prestressed cables which provide structural support as well as a modern aesthetic. In particular, this New Haven $554 million dollar landmark was designed with the low profile of the extradosed structure to ensure minimal interference to the nearby Tweed New Haven Airport.
