Despite high salary prospects for graduate engineers, women overall still shy away from the profession. In the US, only about 14 percent of engineers are women. But why? According to study performed in 2013 by Dr. Martin Grant, FREng of Atkins Energy, of 300 women surveyed:
· 3/4 believe that it is still regarded as a “male” career.
· 7/8 believed that there needs to be a greater awareness of what engineers do. Engineers do not ALL work with engines.
· Almost 2/3 of the women thought that career advice about the engineering profession was weak.
· 55% said that they believed that students were being put off by the idea that engineering was too difficult.
